Written By: Hannah Ellis Photography — Starkville, Mississippi Senior & Couples Photographer

Planning a Starkville, Mississippi engagement session? This guide is optimized to help couples searching for the best engagement photo locations in Starkville, MS. If you’re dreaming of timeless architecture paired with breathtaking natural scenery, combining the Chapel of Memories and Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge creates the perfect balance of classic and adventurous.

Mckinley and Hunter’s engagement session in Starkville was shot in the fall season and we decided on two outfits- one that was more elegant/elevated, and one that was more casual and fun.

The Chapel of Memories and Noxubee Refuge will be highlighted in this guide.

The Chapel of Memories —Located on the campus of Mississippi State University, the Chapel of Memories is one of the most sought-after engagement photo spots in Starkville.

Why Couples Love It!

The Chapel’s timeless scenary makes it ideal for classy, formal, and polished looks that feel elegant and refined, as seen with McKinley and Hunter.

  • Classic brick architecture and beautiful landscape

  • Romantic, intimate feel with the many fountains

  • Perfect symmetry for timeless portraits

  • Meaningful for Mississippi State alumni

This location photographs beautifully year-round, but especially in:

  • Spring when the campus is green and blooming

  • Fall when warm tones complement the brick exterior

Pro Tip: Weekday evenings offer softer light and fewer visitors. Make sure to work around football season in the fall— Mississippi State game days will cause any on-campus location unavailable!

Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge — Just A Short Drive From Starkville

What Makes It Magical

  • Cypress trees and water reflections

  • Boardwalk paths for natural movement shots

  • Glowy golden hour light in beautiful trails and prairie fields

  • Expansive skies for dramatic silhouettes

This location is perfect for couples who love:

  • Outdoor adventure

  • Natural, organic imagery

  • Soft, sunset tones

  • A peaceful, secluded atmosphere

Best Time of Day: Golden hour leading into sunset for that signature Mississippi glow.

For this session— we used the Morgan Hill Prarie Trail, I recommend doing research on the different locations at Noxubee as each one creates a different vibe for photos! Use their sight to view map here!

Why Pair These Two Locations?

Choosing both the Chapel of Memories and Noxubee Refuge gives you:

✔️ Architectural elegance
✔️ Natural scenery
✔️ Variety in your final gallery
✔️ A balance of polished and relaxed imagery

Many couples start at the Chapel for a dressier look, then head to Noxubee for a more relaxed, romantic sunset session.

The Refuge is an easy 25-minute drive from Mississippi State’s campus, making it the perfect second location for sunset photos just outside Starkville in Oktibbeha County.

Best Season for Engagement Photos in Starkville, Mississippi

  • Spring (March–April): Fresh greens + mild weather — Mississippi State’s landscape is top tier in the spring, and places like the rose garden, north/south farm, and some fun fields around Starkville are perfect.

  • Fall (October–November): Warm tones + golden light — more orange tints, “burnt” colors as pictured in this engagement session.

  • Summer: Lush landscapes (plan for sunset to avoid heat) — personally I LOVE summer engagement sessions, as we will get the most vibrant greens and earthy tones! We just have to handle the heat, humidity, and Mississippi summer bugs :/ (It’s worth it though!)

  • Winter: Clean architectural lines at the Chapel — places like the refuge will be color-less, aim for buildings such as The Chapel, Old Main, and Starkville’s downtown charm, like the cotton district.
